We read nowadays more and more news and content from various sources on the web : after newspapers the place is to news sites (Google news, …) , social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, …), blogs or micro blogging apps (X, YouTube channels and playlists, Reddit etc…) or even comments on an article.
In this context we just can’t affort the time to navigate on each site, click on each tag, topic, hashtag and else to be up to date. Moreover sources of information have multiplied. From there getting correctly updated and alerted can be a challenged. You need a way to centralize, organize and keep track of your readings of these articles from various sources.
A feed management solution is something that can help with that. A feed management solution should help you to collect articles from various sources, organize them, read them and eventually share them or archive them.
So what is a feed article / source :
- Article title
- Feed url to the article
- Representative picture of the article
- Article release date
- Article author
- Article summary
An ideal Feed management solution should bundle the following basic features together :
- Manage feed sources in different formats : RSS (whichs stands for Really Simple Syndication), RDF (Resource Description Framework), ATOM or JsonFeed
- Import multiple feed sources in once using the OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) format
- Collect articles from these sources on a regular basis and alert when there are news to read, sort article in reverse chronological orders
- Organize articles by tags or by folders
- Search in text of articles
- Help you read the articles online or offline, mark them as read, archive the article which are already read
- Having a dark mode theme can be a plus
- Mark an article in your favorite or for later reading
- Help define or translate words in the article
- Share article by email or comment on articles on social network : X, Facebook, LinkedIn
- Share several feed sources in once using the OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) format
- Print the article on paper (ideally without ads)
- Export article as PDF
But, with a little help of Artificial Intelligence (AI), some more advanced features could be provided :
- Summarize the text of the article
- Subscribe password protected feeds using HTTP basic authentication
- Transform text to speech
- Share the result of all your feed subscriptions as a new feed with others
- Evaluate feelings of the article
- Help your find new sources related to your interests
- Group similar topics together or deduplicate, filter the noise
- Find other related articles
- Create a fed about a topic from multiple sources
- One the opposite, hide all the articles you don’t like automatically
- Estimate the time to read the article
- Translate article in another language
Once again the google has decomissioned a solution : Google reader in 2013.
So what are the solution outthere ? Well the list below is not exhaustive but can help :
- InoReader which is probably the most complete solution out there
- Newsblur with web and mobile devices
- Feedly which is a web based solution
- QuickRSS is simple solution working on windows, mac and linux
- FeedBro is a browser extension
A feed management can also include the scope of podcast management which has the same basic features.
If you must connect to several secured feed sources you’ll also need an secured account management solution.
Once you ave a solution for feed management, it is a good idea to choose a feed directory which is independant in order to find feed sources that suits you best.
Feed directories have lists of feed sources organised by categories and subcategories, general or specialised feeds.
